THIS COURSE CONSISTS of lectures, demonstrations and clinical participation.
Understand the interplay of pharmacology, pharmacodynamics[8], and pharmacokinetics for sedation medications. This will enlighten you to how the drugs work in the body.
Provide confidence in deciding what medication, if any, is appropriate for each patient and procedure in your practice[3,14,23].
Each medication has its own precautions, contraindication and adverse reactions. We’ll discuss each arena and the protocol for management of emergencies in the dental office.
Be prepared to manage life-threatening situations with an understanding of emergency drugs and equipment required[31].
Upon course completion you will be proficient in emergency airway management[25] with special hands-on participatory sessions.
Protocols and techniques . . .
You’ll observe the administration of oral conscious sedation to patients in a clinical setting through video experiences that demonstrate a wide range of response levels and reactions.
Attain three solid adjustments for the second visit to improve patient comfort within individual patient physiological parameters.
Study administration of local anesthesia in conjunction with sedation techniques.
Gain a complete list of indications and contraindications[8,9,13,25,33,35,36] for the use of enteral
conscious sedation, as well as what dental procedures are best performed under sedation.
Safety and equipment . . .
to recognize and manage potential problems.
[9,10]
Careful patient selection which includes a strong understanding of the indications, contraindications and complications associated with the use of oral conscious sedation is covered at length.
Prevention is everything! Witness emergencies
as portrayed in video experiences.
Nitrous oxide is a valuable tool for any level
of sedation. You’ll learn the basic components and function(s) of the equipment.
Training in four critical techniques for managing a compromised airway (Airway Management), to prevent a life-threatening emergency. Dentists will be provided a supervised clinical experience.
Learn to understand patient monitoring[32] using observation and equipment, with particular attention to vital signs and reflexes related
to consciousness.
Document, document, document. Recognize
the importance of maintaining proper records with accurate chart entries, recording medical history, physical examination, vital signs, drugs administered and patient response[13,52,33].
Life-threatening situations. How to prevent, recognize and manage complications.
Some of the topics covered:
Pharmacology and the agents used in oral conscious sedation, including drug interactions[3,8,9] and incompatibilities.
Protocols and techniques for safely sedating patients with varying needs
Safety and equipment used to recognize and manage potential problems
22 video patient experiences demonstrate a wide range of response levels and reactions
Clinical participation in airway management
As with all courses in local anesthesia, pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods of controlling anxiety and pain, competency must be maintained by completing periodic supplemental courses.
