John Hexem, PhD, MD, is a board-certified anesthesiologist whose distinguished career includes serving on a nationally renowned liver transplant team.
Dr. Hexem earned BS and MS degrees in Chemistry from Yale University. Following the completion of an MD degree from the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Hexem attained a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania, where he also performed his residency in anesthesia. Dr. Hexem was also awarded fellowships in Chemistry and Anesthesiology at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Hexem's role at DOCS Education
Dr. Hexem recently joined the DOCS Education faculty as an instructor in IV sedation. He has taught IV sedation to nurses and dentists in several states, conducting over 50, 8-hour sessions to approximately 500 participants.
He also has a special interest in the impaired physician and plans to teach a future course about the subject.
Professional accomplishments and business ventures
For six years, Dr. Hexem served as the head of the University of Pennsylvania's Liver Transplant Team. During this period, he pioneered new techniques in anesthesia for the liver-transplant patient. These individuals pose unique challenges because of the length of their surgeries and the complexity and volatility of systemic responses. Subsequently Dr. Hexem acted as the Director of Anesthesia at several regional medical centers.
Currently, in addition to teaching IV sedation, Dr. Hexem has a private practice in pain management and dental anesthesia based in St. Louis, Missouri.
Publications
Dr. Hexem is the author of a number of academic papers and has been published in the Journal of Chemical Physics and the Journal of the American Chemical Society, among many others.
