Dr. Michael D. Silverman is globally recognized as a top dental innovator, educator, and advocate for patients’ rights. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1985 and completed his IV sedation mini-residency at Montefiore Hospital in Bronx, NY in 1997. A passionate believer in lifelong Continuing Education (CE), Dr. Silverman has completed more than 850 hours of postdoctoral training and CE between 1985 and 2009.
He first began to develop oral sedation protocols in the mid-1990’s to meet the needs of an overwhelming number of patients at his practice who were experiencing dental fear and phobias. After recognizing the tremendously positive impact sedation treatments had on his patients—and the incredible need throughout the U.S.—he joined forces with Dr. Anthony S. Feck to found DOCS Education in 1999.
In addition to serving as the President and a faculty member of DOCS Education, Dr. Silverman travels across the country to educate dentists on the methods, techniques, and power of oral sedation dentistry. Dr. Silverman has personally treated over 2,750 sedation cases and written dozens of published articles on sedation dentistry. His dental expertise has also led to the natural development of two additional dental-focused companies. In 2000 Dr. Silverman founded RAMP, a full-service dental advertising agency. He went on to establish b2d Marketing, a medical marketing company, in 2007.
In addition to clinical training, he believes that a successful sedation practice is built on intuitive marketing. He doesn’t just stop at teaching dental professionals about sedation dentistry techniques, he also shows them his own tried-and-true methods for promoting sedation treatment, growing a practice, and optimizing profitability. Because science and safety are paramount to Dr. Silverman, in 2003 he established the “Oral Sedation Research Fund” at DOCS Education to conduct scientific research into the safety and efficacy of oral sedation dentistry. The fund has gone on to aid researchers in testing, evaluating, and studying oral sedation methods, protocols, and drugs nationwide.
