6 Ways to Build Patient Loyalty and Promote Oral Health This Halloween

Connect with patients and build community this Halloween! Use costumes, contests, and dental-friendly treats to create lasting impressions and promote oral health.

According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), 73 percent of people participated in Halloween fun and indulgence last year, with an estimated $12 billion in consumer spending, albeit much of it going toward candy. For dental professionals, the challenge is balancing this festive spirit with the need to promote good oral health.

Participating in Halloween celebrations is an excellent opportunity to connect with patients, foster a sense of community, and build likability—setting your practice apart from competitors who miss out on these meaningful moments. Fortunately, being the "fun" dentist this Halloween is possible without compromising your patients' oral health. Here's how to make the most of Halloween in your practice while keeping healthy teeth at the forefront.

1. Get Creative

Themed costumes are a great way to bring a light-hearted atmosphere to your practice, and 2024 brings many fun, work-appropriate costume options. According to Real Simple, this year’s office-friendly Halloween costume trends include popular characters from Beetlejuice, Mario Bros., The Last of Us, Emily in Paris, Minions, Bridgerton, Deadpool and Wolverine, and Disney.

Group costumes, such as a team of superheroes or dental-themed characters, can be a hit with staff and patients. Maximize patient participation by holding a staff costume contest where patients vote for the best costume on your social media. Festive contests boost in-office fun and increase engagement online with a much larger audience.

Of course, choosing a costume that isn't too cumbersome or restricting is also important.

2. Generate Buzz on Social Media

Leverage the buzz of Halloween to engage with your patients on social media.

Hold social media contests where patients share their costumes or hold a pumpkin carving contest with tooth-centric designs. Bonus points for the most creative, tooth-themed entries!

Use the top 2024 hashtags like #TreatYourTeeth, #SpookySmile, #CavityFreeHalloween, or #ToothFairyTreats to maximize your social media reach. Engage your audience with polls, behind-the-scenes videos of staff in costumes, or even Halloween giveaways. Offering prizes like free cleanings or a teeth-whitening session for the most creative submission can keep patients invested.

3. Good For You Goodie Bags

While candy is synonymous with Halloween, it doesn’t have to be harmful to teeth. Put together “dental-friendly” goodie bags for patients that include sugar-free candy, xylitol gum, or even dark chocolate (educate patients on how it's easier on teeth than sticky or sour options).

Take it a step further by offering "Halloween Dental Survival Kits” at community trick-or-treat events and in your practice. These kits can include branded educational materials on how to care for teeth after indulging in sweets, along with dental care items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss.

Halloween is an excellent opportunity to reinforce the message that oral health and Halloween fun can go hand-in-hand while also expanding your brand awareness.

4. It's All-In for Team Spirit

Halloween provides the perfect opportunity to boost team morale. According to TeamBonding, you can celebrate Halloween in the office on a budget by organizing simple potluck lunches where everyone brings themed treats, such as vegetable platters shaped like pumpkins or ghost-shaped cheese boards.

Other low-cost ideas include a Halloween movie screening in the break room or a “best-decorated workspace” contest. These activities can be paired with a Halloween scavenger hunt or a dental-themed spooky trivia contest.

5. Educate Without Preaching

Rather than coming off as a killjoy at Halloween, use it as an opportunity to engage with your patients. For instance, explain that chocolate is a better choice than chewy or gummy candies, as it washes away more easily and is less likely to stick to teeth.

You can share these tips on social media in a fun and engaging manner, such as a "Candy Showdown," in which patients vote on which candies are worse for their teeth.

Create informative and entertaining posts encouraging patients to brush and floss after eating candy, drink plenty of water, and avoid sticky, hard candies that linger on teeth. This way, you promote good oral health without taking all the fun out of Halloween.

6. Follow-up: National Brush Day

Finally, wrap up Halloween by reminding patients that November 1st is National Brush Day. It’s an ideal time to reinforce the importance of good dental hygiene after indulging in sugary treats.

You can offer discounts on cleanings or encourage patients to book post-Halloween checkups with special promotions. Create a festive in-office or social media campaign to make this day a fun and healthy follow-up to the candy-filled holiday.

By incorporating themed costumes, social media engagement, team-building activities, dental-friendly treats, and light-hearted education, your practice can strike the perfect balance between fun and mindfulness this Halloween. You’ll promote oral health while fostering meaningful connections that build patient loyalty and leave a lasting, positive impact on your patients and the community.

Patients of all ages will enjoy the fun, light-hearted atmosphere while you ensure their oral health stays hauntingly healthy!
