Many of you have been asking about what happened at the November 9 ADA House of Delegates meeting with regard to Resolution 77, a proposal that would place substantial new barriers on dentists who provide their patients standard care using oral sedation.

In a close vote, the House of Delegates returned the proposal to the ADA's Council on Dental Education and Licensure (CDEL) for reconsideration next year.

The debate over the controversial Resolution 77 came to a full boil on Saturday, November 7, at a meeting of the ADA's Reference Committee, which was open to the public for comment.

It was standing room only at the Reference Committee hearing. Two microphones stood at the front, one designated for Resolution 77; one against it.

The "against" line was much longer, comprised of a united crowd of general dentists, endodontists and oral sedation specialists. Many DOCS Education members, including Drs. Patricia Higgins and Rowland Holsinger, spoke passionately about the negative impact that Resolution 77 would have on the ability of high-fear patients to receive treatment.

Dr. Dan Gesek and Dr. James Boyle, members of CDEL who have long sought to increase the classroom and live-patient requirements for dentists who provide moderate enteral sedation, spoke multiple times in support of Resolution 77.

The Good News: Resolution 77 was not adopted by the ADA House of Delegates this year.

The Bad News: Despite victory in this year's battle, the war to save sedation dentistry continues. Those forces that hope to restrict or eliminate the use of sedation dentistry by general dentists are already regrouping for next year’s assault.

It's Not Over Yet!
