(Armed) Service with a Smile

Today, docked in San Diego Harbor, the USS Midway is a museum and major tourist draw. Named for the Battle of Midway in World War II, the ship was originally commissioned on September 10, 1945, and remained active until April 1992.

Planes dispatched from Midway flew strikes against North Vietnam beginning in 1965, and the ship served as a floating airbase for large Air Force evacuation helicopters after the fall of Saigon in April 1975.

Part of what makes visiting the USS Midway Museum so special are the armed services veterans who volunteer as docents, sharing the ship’s fabled history, as well as their own rich military experiences.

This gregarious ex-Marine was only too happy to take a minute away from his duties to pose for our We Believe in Smiles™ photographer.

There are 41 places in America named Midway, not counting Midway International Airport in Chicago or the USS Midway.

Whether in Midway, Oregon – the halfway point between Hillsboro to the north and Sherwood to the southeast – or Midway, Missouri – located approximately halfway between St. Louis and Kansas City – professional WBIS photographers span the nation in search of radiant, life-affirming smiles. You can browse an inspiring gallery of more than 700 WBIS photos here.

Daily on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, the We Believe in Smiles™ campaign posts a fresh portrait of an individual (or individuals) who reminds us all of the magic of a healthy smile.
