A Closer Look at CDT Updates for 2026

Few topics inspire more excitement than CDT codes, yet the 2026 updates affect nearly every dental practice.

By Genni Burkhart

The American Dental Association (ADA) released the 2026 CDT updates through ADA News announcements published between September and December 2025, with all changes effective January 1, 2026. These changes introduce new codes and refine existing descriptions to make the Current Dental Terminology (CDT) language clearer and more reflective of current practices. The updates cover services most dentists provide daily, including diagnostics and restorative care, implants, maintenance, and nitrous oxide administration.

For practices focused on patient comfort, clear clinical communication, and accurate documentation, the 2026 CDT updates offer more precise language and more consistent documentation.

The ADA publishes the complete CDT 2026 code set through its CDT book and app, while ADA News provides public summaries of new, revised, and deleted codes. This article reviews those updates and explains their implications for documenting patient care in everyday practice.

CDT and Clinical Documentation

CDT, or Current Dental Terminology, is the common language used to document dental procedures in patient records and third-party reporting. For practices providing more complex care, including multi-procedure visits or sedation-related services, even small wording changes can shape how that care is recorded.

When CDT language is clear, documentation is easier to follow. This is especially important when records need to reflect clinical decisions, multiple services are provided in a single visit, or nitrous oxide and sedation methods are used.

Goals: Efficient and Effective Language

The 2026 updates focus on refinement rather than restructuring. According to ADA News, the ADA tightened language, removed outdated terms, and added codes that better describe services dentists already provide.

For dental teams, this approach reduces uncertainty and limits the need for workarounds when documenting care. In practices providing minimal sedation, the updates also support more consistent differentiation between levels of care.

New CDT Codes Reflecting Current Practice

Several new codes for 2026 address common clinical scenarios that previously lacked precise language.

Key additions include:

  • Point-of-care saliva testing. New supporting documentation for chairside diagnostic testing.
  • Testing for a cracked tooth by allowing a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation to be reported more clearly.
  • Scaling and debridement of an implant affected by peri-implant inflammation, when performed without surgical access.
  • Denture duplication codes for maxillary and mandibular cases, reflecting duplication without full fabrication steps.

These additions improve how care is documented without changing how care is provided.

Revisions to Familiar Codes

Some of the most impactful changes in 2026 involve revisions to the codes teams use frequently.

One example is D2391. The revised descriptor removes references to lesion depth, so the code applies whether or not the restoration extends into dentin. This update simplifies restorative documentation by eliminating distinctions that rarely add practical value.

Nitrous oxide administration was also clarified. The updated descriptor specifies use when nitrous oxide is delivered as a single agent. For practices that provide minimal sedation, this supports more consistent documentation and clearer separation from other sedation services.

When descriptors are updated, documentation should also be updated to reflect the new language. Aligning records with these changes helps improve consistency across teams and patient records.

Codes Deleted for 2026

The ADA deleted several CDT codes for 2026 to reduce redundancy and remove outdated terminology. These changes reflect how those procedures are now described elsewhere in the code set.

Retiring these codes does not suggest that prior care was inappropriate. It helps keep documentation aligned with current standards and avoids confusion during reporting or record review.

A Practical Approach

Most practices can address the 2026 CDT updates through a focused review rather than a full system overhaul.

A practical approach includes:

  • Confirming that practice management software reflects CDT 2026.
  • Reviewing templates associated with revised or deleted codes.
  • Checking commonly used codes, including those related to nitrous oxide and sedation care.
  • Sharing update notes to keep clinical and administrative teams aligned.

These steps support accurate documentation and help dental teams feel confident that the records they keep reflect the care they provide.

In review, the 2026 CDT update primarily focuses on using clearer language. When documentation aligns with how care is delivered, records are easier to understand, communication improves, and dental teams can focus on what matters most: providing safe, comfortable patient care.
