History and recreation collide in the river waters of the Shenandoah Valley, hugging the banks of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.

In 1859, just inland from the river, Robert E. Lee and a group of U.S. Marines quashed the effort by abolitionist John Brown and his companions to initiate an armed slave revolt.

Thomas Jefferson famously declared that “the view was worth a trip across the Atlantic” when he visited the area, located at the intersection of the modern states of West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland.

Kayakers from around the globe cherish the Class I and Class II rapids of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, which have been described as among “the most scenic river areas in North America.” This area is also a particular delight for birdwatchers who sometimes even spot bald eagles soaring overhead.

This smiling couple came ashore in Harpers Ferry, looking no worse for the wear following their early-morning river adventure.

Whether paddling the Colorado River, the Arkansas River, the Devils River (Texas), or braving the drop at Bulls Falls on the Shenandoah, professional WBIS photographers span the nation in search of radiant, life-affirming smiles. You can browse an inspiring gallery of more than 750 WBIS photos here.
