DOCS Education is pleased to announce the addition to its faculty of Dr. John Hexem, who will teach IV Sedation Update. Dr. Hexem is highly regarded instructor with a distinguished background as an anesthesiologist. Dr. Hexem earned BS and MS degrees in Chemistry from Yale University. Following the completion of an MD degree from the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Hexem was awarded in a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania, where he also performed his residency in anesthesia. Dr. Hexem was also awarded fellowships in Chemistry and Anesthesiology at the University of Pennsylvania. He is board certified in Anesthesiology. Dr. Hexem is the author of a number of academic papers and has been published in the Journal of Chemical Physics and the Journal of the American Chemical Society, among many others. For 6 years Dr. Hexem served as the head of the University of Pennsylvania’s Liver Transplant Team. During this period he pioneered new techniques in anesthesia for the liver-transplant patient; these individuals pose unique challenges because of the length of their surgeries and the complexity and volatility of systemic responses. Subsequently Dr. Hexem acted as the Director of Anesthesia at several regional medical centers . Dr. Hexem has taught IV sedation to nurses and dentists in several states, conducting over 50 eight-hour sessions to approximately 500 participants. In addition to teaching IV sedation, Dr. Hexem has a private practice in pain management and dental anesthesia based in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Hexem has a special interest in the impaired physician, a subject for which a future course is planned.
