These Boots Are Made for Smiling

It’s not the boots that make the cowgirl; it’s her smile. This friendly retail clerk we found at the boot shop inside the Wall Drug complex in Wall, South Dakota. Originally, back when it began in 1931, road-weary tourists stopped at Wall Drug for its free ice water.

Today, more than 2 million tourists visit the retail oasis on the outskirts of Badlands National Park, including many smiling cowgirls. Wall Drug has grown into a 76,000-square-foot shopping mega-complex, offering restaurants, amusements, an art museum, souvenirs, and – yes – a full-service pharmacy.

Over the decades, many fans of Wall Drug have snapped photos of themselves at iconic tourist locations around the globe holding up signs detailing how many miles they are from Wall Drug. Long before the We Believe in Smiles™ campaign was born, Wall Drug fans were displaying their best smiles in support of their favorite free-water drug store.

Whether at Wall Drug in South Dakota or the Great Wall of China, professional WBIS photographers span the globe in search of radiant, life-affirming smiles. Want to see more great smiles? You can enjoy a gallery of more than 400 WBIS photoshere here.

Daily on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, the We Believe in Smiles™ campaign posts a fresh portrait of an individual (or individuals) who reminds us all of the magic of a healthy smile. DOCS Education is proud to be the founding global sponsor of WBIS, whose message is simple: No politics. No marketing. No B.S.
