January 24, 2011 To the alumni of the DOCS Education Pediatric Dentistry Sedation course: The 2010 U.S. census results are now available, and they continue to show what we already reviewed in our PSD course—the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population is the 0 to 17 age group. This group will reach 80 million by the end of this new decade. The next paradigm shift in dentistry is in this segment; don’t be left behind! Many of you that completed the DOCS Education PSD course asked us to develop more seminars and products to assist you in implementing PSD into your practice. We heard you—and have done so. (Please visit DOCSeducation.org or call (877) 325-3627 to purchase any of the following courses or products.) Seminars for doctor and staff 1. Teen Sedation Dentistry This one-day course permits general dentists to expand their sedation treatment options to a largely untapped population--teenagers. Topics covered include pharmacology, physiology, case selection, and who NOT to treat. Faculty instill four protocols developed especially for patients aged 13 to 18. Also addressed is emergency preparedness. Sedation care for teenagers does not generally require new equipment or materials and general dentists can usually provide this service within existing office settings. 2. PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) Certification and Recertification Learn to recognize and address the first signs of distress in children. You’ll gain the skills required to respond to respiratory failure, airway obstruction, cardiac problems, and anaphylaxis. Instructors are active emergency personnel with first-hand acquaintance of current practices. Using patient simulators, they’ll offer practice on AEDS, emergency drug administration, and airway management. Included will be a variety of possible emergency scenarios you will learn to confront with equipment common to most dental offices. 3. Personalized Learning Experience— Over-The-Shoulder Training in Pediatric Sedation Dentistry The PSD PLE is designed to enhance and optimize the 3-day Pediatric Sedation Dentistry DOCS course through a firsthand, over-the-shoulder experience. It enables doctors and their teams to experience the clinical techniques and practice management policies of safe, highly successful and efficient pediatric sedation dentistry. You and your staff will participate in actual live patient experiences in the offices of Drs. Sanger, Chiang and Saisho as 12 to 16 children receive pediatric sedation dentistry in one morning. The afternoon consists of one-on-one discussion of clinical and practice management issues. 4. Pediatric Sedation Recertification Online Renew your pediatric sedation dentistry permit with a comprehensive course—in the comfort of your office or home. This efficient and informative online training reviews the essentials of pediatric sedation dentistry as well as updates doctors on the latest topics and procedures. Keep your practice current without the expense of travel by taking this thorough renewal course. Topics covered include airway, equipment, emergency drug regimens, documentation, and anatomy. Products 1. Pediatric Sedation Dentistry Management Series: Book One This guide is a rich source of essential forms, valuable protocols and detailed instructions to aid in pediatric sedation dentistry success. The book contains twenty forms that are essential in the education of parents and the management required for pediatric sedation dentistry. Laws and regulations are constantly being updated, so consultation and review of your forms should be done annually. 2.
