The Washington State Department of Health was approved to implement the Washington State Prescription Monitoring Program (WA PMP) beginning October 7, 2011. The WA PMP, also known as Prescription Review, states that: Pharmacies and practitioners that dispense any Schedule II, III, IV and V controlled substances, including samples, in Washington state or to an address in Washington must electronically report dispensing to the WA PMP starting on October 7, 2011. John Bitting, DOCS Education’s Regulatory Council, notes that two elements of the Prescription Review are important for dentists in Washington state to be aware of: “The WA PMP applies to dentists who dispense from the office (i.e. those who select, measure, compound, label, package, and/or otherwise prepare drugs for administration to your patient, regardless of where the patient ultimately ingests the drug/s). “It does not apply to dentists who write a prescription that a pharmacy fills for thier patient to take at home or if the patient brings those drug/s to your office and you ultimately administer the drug/s to that patient in your office.” For a complete fact sheet on the WA PMP, CLICK HERE.
