Yes – Dental Podcasts Are Worth a Listen!

Listen up! There is a podcast for every passion and profession – including dentistry.

By Susan Richards

With thousands of new words and phrases entering the lexicon since the turn of the 21st century, few have been as ubiquitous as podcasts. It seems as though everyone is either listening to a podcast or launching one.

Podcasting was developed in 2004, and the word itself was coined by a British journalist the following year when he combined pod – from the Apple iPod where the digital files were downloaded – with broadcast. Today, it’s estimated there are over 2 million podcast shows worldwide and podcasting is projected to be a $94 billion industry by 2028.

So, what are they all talking about? You name it.

Podcasts come in a variety of formats including interviews, monologues, conversational, fiction and non-fiction storytelling, and investigative to name a few. Some of the most popular genres are comedy, news, true crime, and health, but suffice it to say there is a podcast for every passion or profession – including the dental industry.

Why Listen to Podcasts?

Part of the ever-increasing popularity of podcasts can be contributed to them being (mostly) free and easy to listen to anywhere, but there are a lot of benefits to logging on. Listeners find them:

  • Entertaining.
  • Informative.
  • Stimulating.
  • Relaxing.
  • And especially, educational.

Dental professionals are finding that podcasts can provide engaging new avenues to personal growth, a leveling up of their skills and knowledge, as well as connections to others in the dentistry community. After a rough couple of years, dentists may also find that podcasts are a great resource for managing job-related stress, isolation, or burnout – without a huge investment of time or money.

Just as there are hundreds of angles on the true crime genre, listening options for dentist podcasts are varied, informative, and entertaining. We’ve compiled a small selection of the top dental-centric podcasts by category based on traffic, popularity, and relevance.

Practice Management

  • The Dentalpreneur Podcast with Dr. Mark Costes. This prolific podcast assembles “the greatest minds of the dental profession” to help listeners achieve more success while being more fulfilled.
  • The Social Dentist with Dr. Yazdan is a popular podcast that integrates the value of social media, mindset, success, and the healthcare industry.

Success and Money

  • The Dentist Money Show invites you to “join thousands of dentists who are learning how to make smart financial decisions.” Their topics include retirement planning, insurance, investing, and personal finance.
  • The Thriving Dentist Show hosted by Gary Takacs guides dentists to create a more profitable practice while delivering a high level of care.

Dental Hygienists

  • A Tale of Two Hygienists has run since 2015 and is presented by – you guessed it – two RDHs who share up-to-date information and interview experts in the field.
  • Tooth or Dare with Irene and Katrina offers interviews with dental professionals and industry social media influencers for conversation, information, and solutions.

General Dentistry

  • Dentistry Uncensored with Howard Farran hit multiple “Top Dental Podcasts” lists by covering a variety of subjects with other professionals sharing their industry wisdom.
  • Dentists can also find several relevant topics addressed by the American Dental Association (ADA) podcasts such as mental health and PPE. The Academy of General Dentistry recently launched a podcast in which they have discussed topics ranging from 3-D imaging to online marketing.

Ready to Get Started?

As commonplace as podcasting has become, it can still be intimidating to some or perhaps considered a fad to be dismissed. At the risk of going down the podcast rabbit hole, it’s worth checking out a few that speak to your interests.

Incisor has used Apple Podcasts for most of the links above, but the other most popular apps for listening include Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Audible, and TuneIn Radio. While most of them charge a nominal monthly subscription fee for their full catalogs, Apple and Google are free. Once you choose your platform you can customize your playlist, get notified of new episodes, and more.

What if you’re itching to share your own particular skillset or witty repartee with the dental world? Similar to the benefits of a blog, adding a podcast to your marketing plan can elevate your practice and establish your expertise in the field. Oral Health Group offers 11 tips on launching your own voice.

Whether listening while you work out or sitting in front of the mic, it’s clear the power of the podcast is here to stay.
