Course Description:

This online course is worth 1.5 CE.

In the seventies, the range of antibiotics available to treat acute odontogenic infections was limited. Today, there are new dose schedules for some of the traditional antibiotics, new drugs in traditional categories, and there are all-new categories of antibiotics.

Dr. Leslie Fang expounds on the new guidelines for the use of antibiotics in dentistry. One might think that in treating odontogenic infection, the key question is the potential for microbial resistance, but the treatment goals for the use of adjunctive antibiotics is—first and foremost—to improve debridement results and then, secondly, to prevent spreading infection.

Objectives:

  • Recognize local and spreading infection as well as the causes of acute dental pain and swelling
  • Identify the appropriate antibiotic to deliver based on full-patient assessment
  • Understand the latest ADA guidelines on antibiotic use
  • Recognize prescription directions and associated patient compliance
  • Learn the long-term consequences of overuse of antibiotics
  • Pinpoint cautions for clindamycin prescribing
