Course Description:

Dentists should be using electrocardiograms whenever they administer IV sedation, says Dr. Leslie Fang. And yet, very few do. In fact, according to an internal survey, 73% of dentists say they’re “not comfortable” reading an EKG.

Why the discomfort? It’s not a technology problem. Today’s EKGs are user-friendly and responsive to voice commands. Rather, the discomfort for dentists stems from a misunderstanding and overestimation of the duties, responsibilities, and skill level needed to monitor a patient’s heart during IV sedation.

Course Objectives:
In this course, Dr. Fang advocates for the use of heart monitors during IV sedation. He offers solutions for the common complaints dentists have about reading EKGs. He summarizes the components of the EKG complex. He also explains the three determinants of cardiac rhythm.

In addition, you’ll learn:

  • Why you can stop worrying about 12-leads
  • How to identify the most common heart rhythms
  • How to interpret a rhythm strip
  • When to stop IV sedation
  • How to quickly spot a troublesome P wave
  • How to derive key points from intra-operative monitoring
  • Why a modified V5 can be preferable as a monitor
  • How the body’s electrical system sequences

… and more.
