Like other forms of sedation dentistry, IV sedation makes the patient relaxed and completely comfortable and drastically reduces dental anxiety and pain. They won’t be asleep during the appointment and will still respond to verbal cues.

IV sedation also gives the dentist greater control of the amount of medication administered and allows the dentist to readily increase or decrease the level of sedation as needed.

An additional benefit includes faster onset of the sedation medications, meaning patients feel the effects of the medication quickly. Because the patient is completely relaxed, you can accomplish more high-quality dentistry in less time which leads to increased production in the practice.

IV sedation has been proven to be very safe and effective. Patients will release less of the endogenous substances that raise blood pressure and increase the heart's oxygen consumption. Patient selection and assessment are of utmost importance to minimize any adverse outcomes. Certain safeguards must be followed to protect the patient's airway.

In many ways, it is easier to work on a sedated patient. The relaxed state of the patient usually allows for a wider opening of the mouth, less movement of the patient in general, and more cooperation.

The DOCS Education program provides 90 hours of comprehensive IV sedation training, which includes 60 hours of didactic study, ACLS training, and 20+ live patient experiences with one-on-one instruction. The home study segment of the course consists of fully guided online modules, short educational videos, 361-page study guide and manual, plus interactive faculty office hours, regulatory support, and much more.

Monitoring, airway management, and emergency equipment are required, as well as specific medication and administration materials such as IV catheters, IV solutions, and IV administration sets. Each participant in the DOCS IV sedation course will receive an equipment/supply list and sources for these supplies and the specific regulatory requirements in the participant's jurisdiction.

90 hours, which includes the online didactic portion, in-person didactic work, ACLS training, and 20+ live patient cases.

Yes! One team member is included in your tuition. You can bring a second assistant for a fee of $1,497.50.

Your teammate(s) will assist with the two-person venipuncture method, but they will not get to do their own venipuncture.

Yes. While your assistant will not get ACLS certified, they do get to participate in the hands-on portion.

Watch how IV Sedation Dentistry can propel your practice to incredible levels of patient care:

Dr. Feck, Wilson and Combs and their amazing team helped all the students from Day 1 to get organized, learn the techniques involved with IV Sedation and then guided us as we hit the ground running to see 20 patients in 3 days and successfully perform IV Sedation Dentistry on them.

The heroes were also Kimberly, who helped sign me up, Lindsay, who helped organize the didactic portion of the course, and the Assistants and Dr. Wilson’s kids who helped turn the rooms around so the Doctors could meet the requirements.

Dr. Feck and his team screened the patients such that the treatment plans were accurate and all the necessary instruments and x-rays were ready for us to perform treatment once sedation was successfully achieved.  The patients were also indeed special people to allow us to work on them.

This course will be one of the most memorable continuing education I have ever had and I am very grateful to the Faculty and the team members at DOCS Education.

The New Convenient Approach

This dynamic IV sedation course for dentists, offered in collaboration with Idaho State University Department of Dental Sciences and Meharry Medical College, is designed from the ground up to be as convenient as possible.

You can complete the preponderance of it from the comfort of your home or office. And when it comes time to participate in the clinical portion of the IV certification training, you and your assistant will fulfill that requirement during a single, four-day, extended-weekend program conducted at one of our state-of-the-art clinics in Lexington, Kentucky or Salt Lake City, UT.

The many benefits you’ll gain from completing this course are unmatched. They include:

  • Incorporating methodologies to provide both enteral (oral) and parenteral (IV) minimal and moderate sedation in an outpatient setting—now and for the foreseeable future. Our course participants have successfully acquired licensure in 49 states. (Does not yet meet the requirements in Nevada.)
  • Expanding your confidence and ability to treat medically complex patients safely, and realizing the synergies that arise—for both doctor and patient—when you strategically combine safe oral and IV sedation—i.e., the best of both worlds
  • Earning 90 hours of CE credits, all of which under PACE rules count as participation/hands-on credits toward obtaining your Mastership and Fellowship in the AGD
  • Following the ADA guidelines for Teaching Pain Control and Sedation to Dentists and Dental Students (Adopted by the ADA House of Delegates in Oct. 2016).
  • Fulfilling the ADA-recommended advanced airway management and opioid prescription training, and qualifying for ACLS certification

The Savings Abound

In dentistry, time is money, and this course is designed to save you both.

First, and foremost, the majority of the required didactic hours for completion of this program are study-at-home.

That means you won’t have to forego seeing patients in your practice during the greater part of your training. Moreover, the 40 hours of in-person, didactic and live patient training that takes place at one of our modern facilities (choose from Lexington, Kentucky or Salt Lake City, UT) is condensed into four consecutive days of onsite learning and clinical practice.

Because travel is only required once—to complete the clinical portion of this course—you will avoid repeated airline and hotel add-ons, not to mention the inconvenience of flight delays and long security lines.

Your tuition also entitles and requires a member of your team to attend the clinical session, where breakfast and lunch are on us, in addition to a celebratory dinner on the final day.
