Course Description:

This course is worth 3 CE.

While medical emergencies are relatively rare in dentistry, statistics show that you will experience two or more incidents in your practice throughout your career. Therefore, being able to respond to such emergencies with knowledge and confidence is an essential skill for every dental professional.

This licensure renewal training will be presented by two esteemed DOCS faculty members: Dr. Steve Yun, a board-certified M.D. and Dental Anesthesiologist in Southern California, and Dr. Jerry Wellbrock, a seasoned clinician with over 30 years of experience.

Respectively, they will cover the proper use and rationale of emergency medications that should be available in every dental office, and how to handle medical emergencies in your practice, including techniques used to sustain a patient’s life. Dr. Wellbrock will share from his own recent personal experience being in charge of a medical emergency coordinated with local EMS, when a patient went into cardiac arrest.

Course objectives include:

  • Learn a medication paradigm that creates a culture of safety regarding medical emergencies in the dental office

  • Review the administration and hidden dangers of epinephrine

  • The proper use of naloxone, albuterol, Benadryl, and nitroglycerin

  • Identify the one emergency medication that is most often neglected or ignored in dental offices

  • How to rate a patient’s airway with careful patient evaluation and selection prior to sedation

  • Learn to protect the airway for sedation and non-sedation patients

  • Manage the airway during sedation and recognize early signs of a compromised airway

  • Equipment every office needs to be ready for medical emergencies
