Course Objectives:

Review essential hepatic physiology and the functions most likely to impact the sedated patient.
Understand respiratory physiology and key risk factors for patients with obstructive lung diseases, including asthma and COPD.
Learn the symptoms and transmission risks of hepatitis A, B, and C.
Examine the risks associated with ASA IV patients, including the very young, the very old, and those with severe systemic disease.
Identify sedation-related medications known to cross the placental barrier or affect fertility, fetal development, and lactation.
Understand the potential for sedation to exacerbate symptoms of schizophrenia.
Recognize the signs of uncontrolled medical conditions and the importance of obtaining a comprehensive patient health history.
Identify and address the most common unrealistic expectations expressed by sedation patients.
