Course Description:

This online course qualifies for 1 hour of CE credit that is automatically issued with a digital certificate upon completion.

“Medical clearance” is frequently requested before dental sedation, yet it is often poorly defined, inconsistently performed, and falsely reassuring. Clearance letters commonly focus on medical diagnoses rather than functional status, physiologic reserve, or anesthesia-specific risk—factors that truly determine patient safety during oral and IV sedation.

Presented by DOCS Education and Dr. Steve Yun, MD, this course reframes pre-sedation evaluation through a risk-based, anesthesia-informed approach designed for dentists who provide sedation in the office setting. Participants will learn how to move beyond checkbox medicine and apply clinically meaningful assessment strategies aligned with anesthesia standards, dental board expectations, and medico-legal scrutiny. Practical case examples highlight when medical consultation adds value, when it does not, and how to document sound clinical judgment when deciding whether—or how—to proceed with sedation.

Course Objectives:

  • Differentiate administrative “medical clearance” from true peri-sedation risk assessment.
  • Understand why clearance letters often fail to reduce adverse events.
  • Apply a risk-based framework to pre-sedation evaluation, incorporating ASA classification, functional capacity, comorbid disease burden, and procedural factors.
  • Identify medical conditions and red flags that meaningfully increase sedation risk in dental office-based oral and IV sedation.
  • Determine when medical consultation, testing, or specialist input is clinically indicated—and when it’s unnecessary or misleading.
  • Modify sedation planning, monitoring, or setting based on patient-specific risk, including escalation to hospital or ASC care when appropriate.
  • Document sedation decision-making in a defensible, board- and litigation-resistant manner.
