Course Description:

This course consists of 2 modules. You’ll earn 7 CE credits upon completion.

Learn the treatment guidelines for determining when to retain the endodontically-treated tooth and when to extract for dental implant placement. In this two-part course, Dr. Goodacre will also look at the important factors required for successful restoration when retaining the tooth.

Treatment Guidelines for Determining When to Extract a Tooth and Place a Dental Implant versus Retain the Tooth

Tooth retention versus tooth extraction and implant placement: which treatment is best? This module will cover the scientific and clinical factors used to determine whether a tooth should be retained through root canal treatment or extracted and replaced with a dental implant. Learning objectives include:

  • Identify the factors that affect the clinical decision process when determining whether to perform root canal treatment or extract a tooth and place an implant
  • Compare the clinical success rates of root canal treatment and dental implants
  • Compare root canal treatment and dental implants based on biologic factors, associated procedures required, cost, ethics, esthetics, comfort, and function

When Teeth are Retained Through Root Canal Treatment, what are the Most Critical Factors that Guide Successful Restoration?

Retaining the tooth through root canal treatment? The second module provides answers to frequently asked questions regarding the most critical aspects of restoring endodontically treated teeth based on contemporary evidence and clinical practice. At the conclusion, participants will be able to:

  • Determine which endodontically-treated teeth need crowns
  • Describe the effect of posts and cores on endodontically-treated teeth and identify the purpose of a post
  • Identify the most common complications associated with posts and cores and the factors that help to minimize these complications
