Course Description:

This course consists of 9 modules. After course completion and a passing score of 75% or above on a proctored test, you’ll earn 15 CE credits.
The Essentials of Monitoring the Sedation Patient is designed for sedation team members in Missouri (minimum of 2) to meet the regulations* to qualify for a moderate sedation site certificate, required for the dental office wherein moderate sedation will be performed. This course also meets the requirements for renewal of the site certificate as set by the Missouri Dental Board.
Presented by Dr. Allan Schwartz, DDS, CRNA, and DOCS Education, this informative program will explore the concepts, protocols, and requirements for monitoring a patient undergoing sedation in a dental office environment.
From preoperative patient evaluation, selection, and consent, through the enteral sedation itself and on to patient recovery and discharge, participants will learn the basics of monitoring, and how to ensure a safe, successful procedure for patients, dentists, and team.
Please note: this course is meant only for MO team members, and not for doctors. CE will not be provided to doctors who take this course.
Course Objectives
- Learn to identify patient requirements for sedation.
- Review the continuum of anesthesia and the depth of sedation.
- Discuss assignment of ASA physical status and classifications.
- Identify the five critical patient vital signs.
- Review basic heart anatomy.
- Understand the differences of pediatric monitoring versus adults.
- Discuss pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
- Learn to assess patient positioning and skin status.
- Identify the risks of venous thromboembolism.
- Discuss nitrous oxide and Guedel’s Planes of Anesthesia.
- Review facility requirements and essential documentation for providing sedation.
- Review patient recovery and discharge after anesthesia.
- Understand critical dental office emergency protocols.
*Regulations vary for different states. Be sure to research and understand the requirements for your state. Missouri regulation requires two sedation team members be present with the dentist during every moderate sedation procedure. This course does not fulfill recertification requirements.
