In the case of a medical emergency in the dental office, dentists and their teams need to think fast and undertake lifesaving actions in order to improve a patient’s chances for a successful outcome. This incredibly important and informative course, presented by Dr. Steve Yun, MD, anesthesiologist, and medical consultant for DOCS Education, will address the most common medical events that may occur in the dental office, as well as the recommended emergency responses for each.

Dr. Yun will also outline the appropriate delegation of roles for the doctor and team members that will make the minutes count in emergency scenarios, such as administering epinephrin, using an AED, or reviving a pediatric patient.

Course Objectives:

Meharry Medical College in joint providership with the Washington AGD through its affiliation with DOCS Education has created a new 8-hour course* that fulfills the new one-time opioid course requirement for DEA registration. The course will cover a range of topics related to opioid prescribing and pain management required by the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act, including the risks and benefits of opioids, safe pharmacological management of dental pain and screening, treating and management of patients with substance abuse disorders, patient counseling and education, and more. It is worth 8 CE.

In order to practice safe dental sedation, it is important to understand how to identify and prevent hazards that can impede patient safety. Presented by Dr. Steve Yun, a board-certified M.D. and Dental Anesthesiologist, he will discuss the latest strategies and tips on how to reduce the impact of cognitive errors during dental sedation.

Patient monitoring is a crucial component of any IV or oral sedation dentistry practice, and a well-trained team can ensure patient safety. Presented by DOCS Education with Drs. Anthony Feck, Leslie Fang, Steve Yun, and Jim Bovia, EMT-P, this comprehensive course will teach qualified Washington team members proper anesthesia monitoring for maximized patient comfort and increased practice productivity. WA team members will qualify for 12 hours of CE credit that is automatically issued with a digital certificate upon successful completion and a minimum exam score of 75% plus a 2-hour affidavit.

​​​​​​​Preparing for a dental board inspection needn’t be stressful for sedation dentists, as long as you understand what’s expected beforehand and have the training and protocols in place to maximize your patients’ safety. In this in-depth course presented by Dr. Steve Yun, MD, anesthesiologist, and medical consultant for DOCS Education, you will learn the most important areas in which to be prepared, including equipment, documentation, medications, and the most common dental office medical emergencies that can occur.

Dr. Yun explains that a good plan is not enough – practice, safety checklists, visual cognitive aids, and a culture of communication will all help ensure a successful dental board inspection.

While medical emergencies are relatively rare in dentistry, statistics show that you will experience two or more incidents in your practice throughout your career. Therefore, being able to respond to such emergencies with knowledge and confidence is an essential skill for every dental professional and components of an emergency response dental team. 

This licensure renewal training will be presented by three esteemed DOCS faculty members: Dr. Steve Yun, a board-certified M.D. and Dental Anesthesiologist in Southern California; Dr. Jerry Wellbrock, a seasoned clinician with over 30 years of experience and Jim Bovia, Paramedic, who is also the instructor for DOCS’ ACLS certification training.
