This online course is made up of 5 video modules that qualify for 8 hours of CE credit that is automatically issued with a digital certificate upon completion. 

Meharry Medical College in joint providership with the Washington AGD through its affiliation with DOCS Education has created a new 8-hour course* that fulfills the new one-time opioid course requirement for DEA registration. (Please see the CERP Joint Providership Recognition Statement below.) 

This comprehensive online program is presented by world-renowned faculty members Steve Yun, MD, Leslie Fang, MD, Ph.D., John Hexem, MD, and Carol Wilson, DMD. In total, you will receive 8 hours of CE. 

This on-demand course covers a range of topics related to opioid prescribing and pain management required by the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act, including the risks and benefits of opioids, safe pharmacological management of dental pain and screening, treating and management of patients with substance abuse disorders, patient counseling and education, proper recordkeeping requirements, and the appropriate clinical use of all drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of a substance use disorder. 

*The Drug Enforcement Administration does not approve specific courses, only specific educational providers. Meharry Medical College, a DEA-approved CERP provider, will issue the certificate upon the completion of this course.

Topics Covered: 

ADA Policy on Opioids (2.5 hours)

Taught by Dr. Leslie Fang, this 2.5-hour class provides an extensive review of all of the safety protocols and regulations related to controlled substances. More specifically, it teaches dentists how to optimize the use of non-narcotic painkillers. 

Examining Addiction (.75 hours)

Board-certified anesthesiologist Dr. John Hexem explains the mechanism of addiction in this one-hour class. Dr. Hexem will discuss brain physiology, new regulations, and iatrogenic addiction, and will outline how dentists can confidently approach the use of opioids and other necessary pain medications without adding to the problem of drug addiction. 

DEA Compliant Recordkeeping (.75 hours)

Dr. Carol Wilson will unpack the steps to DEA-compliant recordkeeping requirements in a dental office. You will learn how to record controlled substances in a DEA-compliant log book and how to properly dispense, store and destroy medications in your office.  

Requirements & Responsibilities of Prescribing Schedule II Opioid Drugs (4 hours)

Dr. Steve Yun will discuss the history, pharmacology and risk of opioid addiction, review the signs of use, dependency, and abuse, as well as the framework for prescribing opioids.

California Doctors

For those doctors in California, two of the eight hours complies with the Dental Board of California’s requirement for a Board-approved course on opioids for license renewal (CCR 1017(a)(4)) titled: Responsibilities and Requirements of Prescribing Schedule II Opioid Drugs.
