In the case of a medical emergency in the dental office, dentists and their teams need to think fast and undertake lifesaving actions in order to improve a patient’s chances for a successful outcome. This incredibly important and informative course, presented by Dr. Steve Yun, MD, anesthesiologist, and medical consultant for DOCS Education, will address the most common medical events that may occur in the dental office, as well as the recommended emergency responses for each.

Dr. Yun will also outline the appropriate delegation of roles for the doctor and team members that will make the minutes count in emergency scenarios, such as administering epinephrin, using an AED, or reviving a pediatric patient.

Course Objectives:

In order to practice safe dental sedation, it is important to understand how to identify and prevent hazards that can impede patient safety. Presented by Dr. Steve Yun, a board-certified M.D. and Dental Anesthesiologist, he will discuss the latest strategies and tips on how to reduce the impact of cognitive errors during dental sedation.

Therefore, being able to respond to such emergencies with knowledge and confidence is an essential skill for every dental professional and components of an emergency response dental team.

​​​​​​​An informed medical evaluation is critical for determining risk factors when sedating dental patients. In this information-packed course presented by Dr. Steve Yun, MD, an anesthesiologist and medical consultant for DOCS Education, you’ll learn the significance of a comprehensive pre-sedation evaluation for optimal patient care and safety.

Dr. Yun will discuss the importance of reviewing the patient’s physical assessment and health history, as well as medical and behavioral disorders in case selection criteria. He’ll share the guidelines and risk factors for accepting and treating sedation patients with respiratory factors, psychiatric conditions, hypertension, cardiac conditions, and more.

As rare as medical emergencies in the dental setting are, it’s still critical to have the proper equipment as well as training in the event of a crisis. Review the essential components for an emergency kit in this course presented by DOCS Education and Jim Bovia, EMT-P. He will review the life-saving tools every dental practice needs on hand, as well as an overview of their use in an emergency. It is worth 1 CE.

Pain, fear, and anxiety can all affect cardiac rhythm. Jim Bovia, EMT-P will discuss the electrical system of the heart and how to identify a normal rhythm plus different irregular heart rates that could indicate a cardiac event. You will learn how to read a heart rhythm monitor, recognize the signs of a serious cardiac event, and identify the underlying causes of irregular heart rates. This course is worth .5 CE hours.

Medical emergencies in the dental setting are rare, but it’s vitally important to be prepared in the event of unforeseen occurrences. Learn the essential components of an emergency response dental team in this course presented by Jim Bovia, EMT-P. Jim Bovia will share a recording of an actual team training for a cardiac event, while explaining the six positions of a high-performance emergency team. Participants will review the different roles of dentist and team during an emergency and how to practice effective closed-loop communication. It is worth .5 CE.
