Effective May 28, 2009: The Manitoba Dental Association requires dentists providing their adult patients with conscious sedation with an oral sedative (without nitrous oxide) to successfully complete "a course of study with a minimum of 6 hours of didactic instruction specific to oral sedation in the last five years".*
*When the intent is anxiolysis using a single oral sedative (without nitrous oxide), the MDA does not require formal training.
*Nitrous oxide conscious sedation requires "a course of study with a minimum of 6 hours of didactic instruction" in the last 5 years plus performing "6 supervised cases" in an MDA-approved programme or course.
*Pediatric conscious sedation (<10yo) with a single oral sedative requires qualifying for adults first and then an additionals pediatric-specific "course of study with a minimum of 6 hours of didactic instruction" in the last five years and performing "5 supervised cases of oral sedation" in an MDA-approved programme or course.
*Conscious sedation on adults using a combination of an oral sedative and nitrous oxide requires qualifying for the individual modalities first and then additional training and supervised cases in an MDA-approved programme or course.

Why Do Oral Sedation?
An estimated 100 Million (nearly 30%) people nationwide are in need of dental care but too fearful to seek you out. To date, access to care for these patients has been limited. Now you can help.
Practicing oral sedation has many advantages for you, not the least of which is treating a more comfortable patient. Other advantages are: performing more dentistry in a single visit instead of having the patient come back again and again; bigger restorative cases from patients who were previously reluctant due to anxiety; and patients feeling little to no post-operative discomfort regardless of the procedure - resulting in more referrals.
And for your patients it means something else. A comfortable experience - often with no recollection of the visit or the time passed.
