Course Description:

Dental patients from the ages of 13 to 18 are no longer children but not quite adults, therefore dentists require particular skills and information when providing sedation dentistry to adolescents. The goal is to use the most controllable drugs and techniques with the widest margin of safety.
This comprehensive course, taught by DOCS Education faculty members Dr. Carol Wilson and Dr. Steve Yun, includes the unique protocols specifically tailored to teen patients. You’ll learn the reasons for and benefits of sedation for this age group, and how to make an informed medical evaluation for determining potential risk factors. Dr. Anthony Feck will also provide a comprehensive review of nitrous oxide – its history, administration, and side effects.
Course Objectives:
- Discuss the pharmacology, selection and dosages of oral sedation medications in teen patients.
- Compare and contrast the protocols available and their risks and benefits as they relate to your patient population.
- Identify and understand the physiology of teenagers as it relates to sedation dentistry.(313, 314, 315, 316, 317, 318)
- Recognize the differences in physiology and pathophysiology in teen patients versus adults.
- Review the potential risk factors of sedating the complicated teen patient.
- Understand FDA boxed warnings that are pertinent to pediatric sedation.
- Learn dosages and protocols through real patient case studies.
- Know the four factors that contribute to adverse drug reactions with respect to sedation of children.
- Review emergency preparedness and equipment necessary for teen sedation.
- Learn ASA Classification as applied to sedation patients.
- Prepare for the most common medical events that may occur in the dental office.
- Review the necessary precautions for sedating children with N2O.
