Course Description:

This online course qualifies for 5 hours of CE credit that is automatically issued with a digital certificate upon successful completion.

DOCS has provided Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen training to thousands of dentists and staff since 1999 and is proud to offer specialized sedation and monitoring training for Michigan dental assistants and hygienists.

In accordance with the Michigan Administrative Code Section 338.11411, dental assistants or hygienists who have successfully completed a course in monitoring the administration of nitrous oxide analgesia can now monitor nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation with training, experience, and certification.  Dental Hygienists can complete an optional clinical portion to qualify for administration of nitrous oxide under direct supervision of a licensed dentist.

Presented by DOCS Education with Dr. Anthony Feck, Dr. Carol Wilson, and Jim Bovia, EMT-P, this comprehensive course will teach qualified assistants and hygienists the techniques of N2O administration, enabling them to maximize patient comfort and increase the practice’s productivity.

It includes five (5) hours of online didactic education, required for monitoring nitrous oxide, and a Dental Hygienist is provided instructions for acquiring hands-on training with five (5) patients, under the supervision of a licensed dentist to qualify for administration of nitrous oxide. The combination of didactic training and patient experience with dentist supervision allows the student to learn on their own schedule, with no travel required.

Additionally, Dr. Wilson will offer tips to increase nitrous oxide success in your office, unravel myths, and deliver practical facts that will make any provider more confident in offering this simple form of mild sedation to the anxious dental patient. Participants will also learn the essential components of an emergency response dental team from Jim Bovia, EMT-P, who is the instructor for DOCS’ ACLS certification training.

The program is offered through an affiliation with the AEGD Program in the Department of Dental Science, a CODA-accredited program, at Idaho State University.

Course Objectives:

  • Review the history of nitrous oxide and how it works.
  • Review nitrous oxide administration techniques for predictable and effective results.
  • Cover guidelines for patient monitoring and proper use of special equipment.
  • Understand pharmacology and pharmacokinetics of nitrous oxide.
  • Learn about the safe distribution and storage of N2O in the office environment.
  • Discuss the potential misuse and abuse of nitrous oxide.
  • Understand the anatomical structures involved in inhalation anxiolysis.
  • Review relative contraindications to nitrous oxide use.
  • Learn to identify acceptable candidates for nitrous oxide.
  • Identify the essential components of an emergency response dental team.
  • Learn how to use an AED during a medical emergency in the dental office.
  • Understand the importance of recordkeeping and time code recording in an emergency.

Part 1:

Dental assistants and hygienists will complete five hours of online didactic training through DOCS Education, on their own schedule, at their home or office. A digital manual will be provided to accompany the course. Students must pass the final quiz with a 70% or greater grade before moving on to clinical training.

Course participants will have unlimited electronic access to DOCS’ highly respected and experienced faculty members for questions regarding the course content.

Part 2*:

Once a dental hygienist has completed and passed the didactic requirements, they must observe nitrous oxide administration to five (5) patients in a clinical setting by a Michigan-licensed dentist. The Michigan dentist you choose (generally the employer dentist) will document competency and completion on a form provided by DOCS, and the signed affidavit will be proof of completion.

Part 3:

Once the team's qualifications verified*, and the online portion of the course is completed, CE will be provided. Send the documents to [email protected] to request a certificate of completion. The dental assistant or hygienist should retain a copy of the CE letter, certificate of completion and the signed affidavit in order to legally administer N2O and oxygen under dentist supervision.

*Michigan regulations only allow for a Dental Hygienist to administer nitrous oxide. The clinical portion is not required for Dental Assistants. Please note that a dental hygienist must complete a Board-administered examination within 18 months of completion of both didactic and clinical portions to obtain a license to administer Nitrous Oxide.

** Dental assistants must submit a Registered Dental Assistant license. Dental hygienists must submit a Michigan Dental Hygienist License.
