Course Description:
This Light Sedation online course qualifies for Oregon’s nitrous oxide permit renewal requirements*. It provides 4 hours of CE credit that is issued with a digital certificate upon successful completion and a minimum exam score of 75%.
DOCS has provided Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen training to thousands of dentists and staff since 1999 and is proud to offer specialized nitrous oxide and oxygen sedation training for Oregon dental hygienists.
Presented by DOCS Education and Dr. Anthony Feck, this light sedation program will take a comprehensive look at N2O administration for providing safe and effective sedation to your adult and pediatric patients. You will also gain a basic understanding of how nitrous is fabricated and distributed, how to identify and prevent its misuse, the pharmacology, as well as a critical overview of monitoring the vitals of a sedation patient.
Course Objectives:
- Define key terms in the use and administration of nitrous oxide.
- Establish appropriate oxygen application protocols.
- Review the history of how nitrous oxide was discovered and how it is manufactured.
- Identify the equipment in your office, including failsafe mechanisms.
- Discuss the abuse potential, biological consequences, and legal considerations.
- Understand the basic pharmacology and pharmacokinetics of N2O.
- Learn to obtain pre-sedation baseline values for physical and psychological parameters.
- Know how to use your monitoring equipment and set up alarms.
- Identify cardiac conditions that should raise red flags for sedation.

In order to renew a Nitrous Oxide Permit, the permit holder must complete four (4) hours of continuing education every two years in sedation or nitrous oxide.
