All dentists who administer oral conscious sedation want to keep their patients comfortable, happy, and safe. To reach those goals, dentists must understand the dynamics of each drug they administer. That is, they must know how the drug interacts with receptors in the body and the location of those receptors.

In this 1 hour CE course, Dr. Feck explains how basic chemistry determines the effects of a drug. He uses a popular sedative as an example to show the path it travels to bind with a receptor, turn it on, and boost the effect of a naturally-occurring chemical. He discusses chemistry again to reveal how the body’s composition changes the dynamics of a drug.

While tobacco use has decreased over the years, nicotine remains an addictive drug with a greater effect on the central nervous system (CNS) than caffeine, cocaine, or amphetamines. As a dental professional providing oral sedation to nicotine users – whether smoking, vaping, or dipping – it’s important to evaluate the usage and frequency to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for the patient.

Dr. Anthony Feck will share the assessment tools, risk, and treatment, based on the individual patient’s nicotine use. You’ll learn that the intensity of nicotine cravings can be more powerful than the sedation medications being administered, and how to instruct the patient accordingly on their use prior to treatment.    This online course is worth 1 CE.
