Course Description:
This is a four-module video course. You’ll earn four hours of continuing education credit upon completion.
The number of dentists trained in administering sedation (minimal and moderate) continues to grow. Sedation training provides a competitive advantage for general dentists. And yet, despite the training, many dentists question their abilities. Why?
In this course, Drs. Leslie Fang, Anthony Feck, and Michael Silverman address specific issues that, collectively, undermine your confidence in administering sedation. First, Dr. Fang demystifies electrocardiograms. Second, Drs. Feck and Silverman show how to protect an intact airway and treat a compromised one. Third, Drs. Fang and Feck discuss real patient cases that incorporate the best sedation protocol.
Cardiac Rhythm Review
Very few dentists use electrocardiograms when administering IV sedation. The reluctance is due, largely, to an overestimate of the duties, responsibilities, and skill level needed to operate an EKG on a sedated patient. In this module, Dr. Fang advocates for the use of heart monitors during IV sedation. He offers solutions to make reading an EKG easier. He also explains the three determinants of cardiac rhythm.
In addition, you’ll learn:
- Why you can stop worrying about 12-leads
- How to interpret a rhythm strip
- When to stop IV sedation
… and more.
Airway Management
Protecting a patient’s airway is essential for any level of sedation. That’s why all patients under consideration for sedation should be thoroughly screened. It’s also why patient relaxation tactics that intrude on the ability to see, hear, or feel a patient’s breath should be shunned. Over two modules, Drs. Feck and Silverman teach you how to prepare a patient to breathe during sedation. You’ll also see positioning and support device demonstrations to help patients recover from breathing interruptions.
In addition, you’ll learn:
- Checklists for measuring a patient’s airway risk
- How dentures affect air mask fit
- The pros and cons of common airway support devices
… and more.
Emergency Kit
As rare as medical emergencies in the dental setting are, it’s still critical to have the proper equipment as well as training in the event of a crisis. Review the essential components for an emergency kit in this course presented by DOCS Education and Jim Bovia, EMT-P, who also leads the DOCS’ Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification training.
Mr. Bovia will review the life-saving tools every dental practice needs on hand, as well as an overview of their use in an emergency. Learn the necessary steps for you and the team to take, including the 911 call, performing compressions, airway management, fluid resuscitation, and more.
Course Objectives:
- Review the essential components of an office emergency kit
- Learn how to size and insert oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airways
- Review the use of an AED during a cardiac emergency in the dental office
- Learn the differences in providing IV and IO vascular access
- Identify what the dentist and the team should be doing in an emergency
Boost your confidence as a sedation dentist by focusing on the information that matters.
